Oh and by the way a pretty good S&S build (not really for T3, but thats what we have DT's for )

I know Arg was asking after a decent S&S build so might point him to that build :)

Guard builds

Postby Argolid » 08 Aug 2010, 13:44

thats a very similar build to the one i have. But i have stone skin maxed out for the protections. The one point invested in sacrifice ability i have it on stormblade. I also dont have surging health as im not sure if it works.
This is the one im trying now: http://aoc.yg.com/feat-planner?class=20 ... 21,4013-21

Comments are welcome.
I think sadly on a raid situation, to fight for agro against a polearm guardian, shield and sword now have a problem due to the lack of demage which will force me to see if i can put on my gameplay the switch weapon and put in flashing arc combo for the demage, in conjunction with volcanic rage or juggernaut and with bloody vengeance. Its just sad that as a shield and sword tank im forced to use a polearm to win an agro fight.
Hopefully they will change that in the future.

Looking forward for the raid to make a life test.:)

Very nice build indeed

Only comments:
Dulling blow - ? such a prime S&S combo that most S&S guard have 2 levels of them on their quick bar
You have stand your ground, never used it, does it work against raid bosses ?
3% dps decrease by losing that point in sustained rage...

Dont forget You are also up against full T2 gear and a guard that is spamming all his agro skills trying to keep as many mobs on him as he can :) (switching between mobs)

I am actually tempted to try S&S again for a change :) in fact gonna do that build now !

I understand what u said pari. In fact very valid points in there!
I just think that against a conqueror or DT, who have irritate as well, can have goad and hatefull strikes, and also have more goading abilitys i seem to come short in dps to get the agro. Im forced to switch weapon, put in the flashing arc IX and VIII to juice up my demage and get more atention. Thats what makes me sad.
As for my build, basicaly the reason why i havent feat improved dulling blow is because i got no idea how much it improves. It doesnt say anything. For instance bleeding dulling blow says how much it improves hence why i feated it.
So the question is , is improved dulling blow working? increases the evade chance in how much?, plus let me say ok it might be a plus to have it feated for the evade chance but i built this to get agro for my character. So it doesnt really go into my intended direction.

Totally agree with stand your ground and with sustained rage. i will remove the point from stand your ground and give it to sustained rage.

Anyway i usually open up with counterstrike IV followed by dulling blow IV and then irritate, then overreach then dulling blow 3, and so on.
Always trying to put irritate, coh, hatefull strikes.
I will now integrate volcanic rage, with flashing arc IX and VIII after placing my counterstrike and dulling blow for the dots. Hopefully will give me all the desired atention i want:)

I understand i am in disavantage against a full tier 2 tank. Never intended to win it, but it seems obvious for me that if i rely only on shield and sword i will not have enough demage to climb up the agro table. I will only have the agro if the other guy wants.

And no worries i know my place, i will only mess arround to test it on the trash mobs i wont put in danger the group by testing it on a boss.( probably i wouldnt make it anyway)

Stay cool!:)

usually if im not mt on raid i dont work as much for aggro if the mt is not in trouble..i work for it..but not going gung ho with aggro abilites.
just keeping the mobs of the clothies and other folks.. i alwasy try to be 2nd on aggro list after maintank.

you dont need to beat pari if he's mt...you should aim for being 2 nd on aggro to save any clothies etc...
im working on a s&b guard aswell...lets see how gimped i will be ; )

Agree with this - if a MT is in trouble then take aggro; otherwise OT fighting for aggro (outside of a couple specific fights) is pointless...as long as a tank has the mob then no need to fight for the aggro, just TAB through mobs to check they're tanked and not chasing Junoa :p

Be interesting to see how the S&B builds go - and interesting to see what the expected revamp in 2.1 (coming late Sept/Oct) will do to Guards.

I never had any intention on wining pari or anything like that. WHenever i atended the raids ive always did exacly what u said. Look arround see whats not tanked and tank it.
I just find it interesting. Im trying to understand the mechanics arround shield and sword guardian, and how i can improve my overall performance.

I do not want to take anyones place. I know my place on this group of players who raid at alot of time and have there roles assigned. Any of you have more expenrience then i am and know more on how it works and like i said im just trying to understand how i can improve my feat build towards being more competitive in agro.

Don't think anyone is saying that - just people generalising on how they tank, some of which will be different in pugs than pure guild runs...

It'd be interesting if you can achieve a good aggro build with S&B - you'd need quick single target grabbing (Seruah, Chatha, Imp, Levi, gargoyles, Smurf) and aoe grabbing (adds at Farty) at raid level; another good place to test things out is HM Pillars...

Given Guards got shafted in the revamps that happened, hopefully they regain their original role of tanking via high health/mitigation...but we'll see ;)

used an S&S build for a couple of raids now and although it's excellent turtle tanking on raid bosses, it is harder to keep several mobs (trash) under control. So I have to admit that polearm is more usefull in my opinion and will switch back to it for comming raids....

(p.s. I do like S&S better style wise :) )
