Diablo III - Auctioning items for real live cash

Whilst not a real MMO it does have some similarities and...this:

Diablo III will allow players to buy and sell their stashes of loot with real-life currency, developer Blizzard said on Monday.

The hotly anticipated role-playing game will feature an online auction house in which players can hawk almost everything they find in the game for either in-game gold or real money. The company calls it a “convenient, powerful, and fully integrated” solution for players who want to turn their green boots into greenbacks.

The Choice Is Yours

Use of either the real-money or gold-based auction house is completely optional -- that decision can be made on a per-item basis, and both versions of the auction house are functionally the same. In addition, players have the option to simply sell the items they obtain to in-game vendors for gold. They can also trade items to other players through a direct character-to-character trading system in the game in exchange for gold, other items, or just an overwhelming sense of goodwill.

Selling in-game items via an eBay real-life auction sytem for real cash? No thanks...

Depends if it catches on within Diablo ... for any MMO developers it would be an additional revenue stream, I'd guess.

but yeah ... :( ...

Along with this there's 2 other "features" that aren't looking good for D3

The game requires a constant internet connection. It cannot be played offline.

“One of the things that we felt was really important was that if you did play offline, if we allowed for that experience, you’d start a character, you’d get him all the way to level 20 or level 30 or level 40 or what have you, and then at that point you might decide to want to venture onto Battle.net. But you’d have to start a character from scratch, because there’d be no way for us to guarantee no cheats were involved, if we let you play on the client and then take that character online.”

Mods are “expressly prohibited.”

“For a variety of gameplay and security reasons, we will not be supporting bots or mods in Diablo III, and they’ll be expressly prohibited by our terms of use for the game.”

All seems a step backwards for a non-MMO...and there's a lot of negative feedback floating around.
