Black screen crash

Postby Tjan » 20 Dec 2011, 18:34

).I started getting a few black screen crashes of my pc. I built it myself so shoddy workmanship is probably partly to blame. The crashes corrupted my ssd but I believe I have fixed that issue now. After some googling I found quite a few references to recent nvidia 580 voltage problems. I have dual msi 580 cards (I use the sli for photographic processing before someone tells me about aoc and sli).
I have installed the beta version of nvidia 290 drivers and I have increased the graphics card voltage to 1.75v. Seems stable so far but I can only generate the crash in aoc (I spend more time there ;) ).
Anyone encountered similar issues or got constructive advice other than buy Radeon.?

Black screen crash

Really can't do anything but guesses... here is one guess:

How's your power supply - is it powerful enough and working well - Quick estimation is that system having 2 graphics cards should have almost 1000W power supply (even that only 1 is fully used while aoc).

Badly working power supply can cause lot of mysterious trouble. Since you have assembled the computer yourself you might want to check how is the power supply design - some have multiple power outputs that have separate regulators. You might want to make sure not all peripherals are on the same wire.

Have to agree with Kyy, sounds like power problem. Buy a good modular power supply. Will cost you some but they last a lifetime.

I have an Astec 1200W power supply and I believe that is running ok. I have had the system monitor writing to disk and checked a few of the crashes and realised that my graphics cards are hitting 102C then cutting. I have modified the fan profiles for the cards and this helps a little by bringing the fans up to higher rpm earlier. I have upgraded fans on the processor and on the rear of the case but the graphics cards sit at the base of the case. The side of the case is a grill but the air flow must be bad. I tried with the side off and I peaked at 80C. I have blown compressed air through the fans so I think it is not a dust build up. Now looking to see if I can mount a fan on the grill to improve air flow adjacent to the graphics cards. Not sure if I should be blowing air to them or trying to suck away? There is not a lot of space to the side or around the cards and I do not have cables obstructing so I may have to mount the fan on the outside of the grill.
